Gentoo driver sd needs updating updating a jtable
The Problem now is that I can't find the kernel settings and always get a kernel panic because it can't find the root device. Here's the data I have:lspci (Intel ICH chipset):.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82830 830 Chipset Host Bridge (rev 04) .0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82830 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (rev 04) .1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 82830 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 02) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 02) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 02) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-M) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 02) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev 82) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL (ICH4/ICH4-L) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 02) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801DB (ICH4) IDE Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) SMBus Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02) .0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.Out of curiosity, I reverted the BIOS to defaults (Automatic translation mode) and it still works. So basically I don't know what happened but tinkering in the BIOS fixed the issue that I can't reproduce. AHCI, Native, SATA It's best to pick 3 if you can find it and exists at all.To hotplug, in System/Preferences/Removal Drives and Media, Storage tab must be set to "mount removal drives when hot-plugged".

That would mean that the filesystem driver for your root partition is not in the kernel. I have it dual booting with Windows also (unfortunately, I need both).Failure to use make oldconf will get you a kernel that is as mess, as the .config will not be legal for the new kernel. I assume that root is one of the partitions on /dev/sda ? Partition table: 1 = Dell Utility (don't know why I kept this) 2 = Windows 3 = /boot 4 = Extended 5 = swap 6 = / is taken directly from my working kernel boot, which is why I used that as a template for the 2.6.28 entry.
